How to set smart goals for personal growth

The series of processes and development to oneself in reaching their maximum level of potential is termed personal growth.

Personal growth is otherwise also known as self-improvement.

The best way to start one’s personal growth is to set goals.

A goal is an intended desired ambition an individual is aiming, towards achieving.

The most effective way to have successful personal growth is to set SMART GOALS.

A goal is said to be smart when it conforms to the order of specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based.

Specific: Every goal must be targeted towards a direct objective, always identify what exactly it is you want to accomplish and how you plan to accomplish it, doing too many things eventually becomes a distraction.

Example: I will start exercising daily to loose some weight.

Measurable: This is where the how comes in, your goals must have a step-by-step guide on how to achieve them.

Example: I will go and register for exercise sessions in a gym.

Achievable: This probes the possibility of the goal and if every means necessary to obtain it, is available, here more research is needed.

Example: I will walk to the gym close to my house and register for it.

Relevant: Your goal must serve a purpose and not just any purpose, but a very useful purpose, one that will benefit and be advantageous to yourself and to society at large.

Example: I will record my gym sessions and gym results and upload it.

Time_based: Everything gets done, when there is a time frame attached to it, even your goals, don’t just plan for the what and how, Make sure to include, when it is going to happen, that always sets you in motion to achieve your result.

Example: I will begin tomorrow by 8am.


Now we know what smart goals are, how do we apply them to our personal growth?

Here is a step-by-step guide.

Write down your smart goal: A goal not written stands a chance of not getting actualized. Putting your goals into writing makes the goal possible to achieve.

Make it visible: Ensure your written smart goals are kept in a visible place, consistent interface with your smart goals always keeps you in constant reminder of them.

Break it down: Always break down your smart goals into simpler and lesser tasks, that way it reduces the stress, and makes it less overwhelming and more fulfilling.

Be consistent: Whatever your smart goals are, a conscious regular practice of it, sets it in a result-oriented mode, a consistent routine of your smart goals also helps to review your progress and make necessary adjustments if needed.

Celebrate your wins: Always appreciate and celebrate your achievements no matter how small, it serves as a good source of motivation and strength, to keep going and be successful.
