History of NiMSA
The Nigerian Medical Students Association (NiMSA) is the oldest and foremost student organization in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. She is the umbrella body of all 75,000 medical students in the forty-five colleges of medicine across all the states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory. NiMSA is affiliated with the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA) and the official student arm of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). (Act Cap 221 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria).
It is also the largest professional student group in Sub-Saharan Africa with the representation of about 2,000 Nigerians studying medicine in various parts of the world. Established in 1968, NiMSA has continued to foster unity and cooperation among all medical students within the country and other medical schools outside the country. She has also taken giant strides to afford medical students and her partners a formidable front to tackle pertinent issues plaguing health care in our immediate society, and the world at large. Since its inception, NiMSA has expanded from one Medical Students Association (MSA) and 300 members to about 45 MSAs with over 75, 000 Members.
NiMSA has been providing a means of interaction and networking among members and allies: exposing them to Clinical and Research Exchange Programs, outreach to various communities, Conferences, Training and Workshops amongst others locally, nationally and internationally.
NiMSA, over the past years, has established official relations and partnerships with notable ministries and other government agencies such as The Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ipas International, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS), among others. In the same manner, NiMSA and its various standing committees have been in collaboration with numerous non-governmental organizations championing the cause of health coverage, vulnerable populations (women, children, adolescents), and neglected segments of our society, and earning for itself a global voice through advocacy, outreaches, projects and empowerment programs.
NiMSA joined and attained the full membership status of the International Federation of Medical Student Association, IFMSA (www.ifmsa.org) in 1970, thereby creating access to professional and research exchanges, and opportunities for recognition and internship at the World Health Organization (WHO), World Medical Association (WMA), World Federation of Public Health Association (WFPHA), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the United Nations (UN) amongst others.
